Grounding Education in Environmental Humanities

A virtual Critical Thinking Circle session was organized for the students of Women University Multan on April 1, 2022, where the book “Grounding Education in Environmental Humanities: Exploring Place-Based Pedagogies in the South” by Taylor & Francis Group was discussed. The session was moderated by Ms. Sofia Hussain and the duration of the session was 60 minutes.
The book that we selected for this session draws together educators and scholars to engage with the difficulties and benefits of teaching place-based education in a distinctive culture-laden area in North America: The United States South. Despite problematic past visions of cultural homogeneity, the South has always been a culturally diverse region with many historical layers of inhabitation and migration, each with its own set of religious and secular relationships to the land.
Ms. Sofia took the main points from the book and engaged the participants by discussing each of them in the context of Pakistan. During the session, participants were also asked to make a list of the problems that people in their area face and discuss them in the session when it was their turn.
The participants actively participated in the activity and raised issues in their community such as male dominance, lack of awareness among the people, pollution, and so on. It assisted them in broadening their perspective on the problem and motivating them to consider potential solutions. The session was highly interactive, and it assisted students in confronting the need to develop more sustainable local communities in order to address globally significant challenges. It was attended by 15 students.
