The Moment of Lift- GCU Lahore
On May 19 2021, the fourth session of Critical thinking circle was held at the GCU Women Development Center. The session was moderated by the co-incharge GCUWDC Ms. Naima Kazmi having the core team member Hadia Abid as the main speaker about the book. The discussion was based on the book “The Moment of Lift” by Malinda Gates. Melinda’s journey, as well as her experiences with Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, was discussed chapter by chapter. The incharge GCUWDC Ms. Sumera Khalil gave the introductory remarks about her understanding of the book and encouraged all the participants to talk about their moment of lift in their lives.
One of the main topics of conversation was how women can achieve financial independence to secure their place in society and their family. In addition, the discussion also covered important issues such as child marriages, women education, family planning, and Mother’s health in general.
The book is a personal and powerful memoir of Melinda Gates’ experiences and journey to become a champion for women’s rights and gender equality. One strength of the book is its personal touch. The participants discussed how Melinda Gates shares her own experiences and stories of women she has met around the world, making the book relatable and engaging. She also provides a well-researched and evidence-based analysis of the issues that women face, especially in developing countries, and presents practical solutions to address these issues.
The book highlights the importance of empowering women and girls, not only for their own well-being but also for the betterment of society as a whole. Ms. Abid talked about how Melinda Gates argues that when women are empowered and given equal opportunities, they can contribute to economic growth, reduce poverty, and improve health and education outcomes for their families and communities.
The overall discussion was engaging and thought provoking, leading to an enriching experience for all participants. The session ended, with everyone gaining a better understanding of how women can achieve financial freedom and security. The participants were left with an appreciation of the importance of education and health in women’s lives. The critical thinking circle provided a platform for a meaningful and inspiring conversation, encouraging everyone to think critically about their own experiences and perspectives towards the path of progress. As far as the book is concerned, overall, “The Moment of Lift” is a compelling and informative read that provides valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities facing women around the world. While it has some limitations, the book is an important contribution to the ongoing global conversation on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
